How TeamNest Grounded Chronic Absenteeism on an Airport Site

Background

A contractor assigned to the upcoming  Navi Mumbai Airport was required to hire local villagers living near the airport to work on part of the contract. The proximity of these workers' homes to the site should have benefited the contractor but instead, became a huge challenge.

Pain Points

Workers would mark their attendance manually at the site and return home after a few hours. Then at some point in the evening, they would revisit the site for a few hours before signing out. The nature and scale of this chronic absenteeism disrupted the contractor’s day-to-day operations and impacted the project in multiple ways. The unaccounted absenteeism in the workforce onsite led to unforeseen delays in the project. The delays led to burgeoning direct costs of increased wages and unplanned indirect costs due to unmet deadlines.

Solution

Our client had a serious issue on their hands with workers who were constantly MIA and the project being damagingly delayed. Our solution for this situation was a tweak to the location-based attendance management feature within TeamNest.

We devised a customized workflow driven by geofencing and geotagging technologies and implemented it through TeamNest’s mobile app. Here’s a flow of how the solution was designed and executed -

1. Geofencing: A virtual perimeter was established around the worksite with a radius of 200 meters from the entrance
2. Attendance System Integration: Workers had to mark their attendance within this geo-fenced area and only on the TeamNest App using their mobile phones
3. Random Notifications: After initial attendance, the mobile app sent frequent notifications (every 45 to 75 minutes) requiring workers to mark their attendance again
4. Geotagging: Each time workers marked their attendance, the app tagged the geographic coordinates of the workers with every notification that appeared on their mobile phones.

Impact

• Improved Workforce Monitoring: The geofencing and geotagging system ensured workers remained within the designated work area throughout their shift.
• Increased Productivity: With workers being present and working onsite consistently during work hours, the contractor was able to increase worker productivity and improve project timelines and efficiency.
• Better Project Management: The TeamNest app provided data-driven insights on worker locations and attendance patterns, enabling better workforce management and project planning.

This solution effectively addressed the problem of chronic absenteeism at the Navi Mumbai airport worksite, ensuring the contractor had better visibility of its labor force.
